WHY FOOD IS MORE THAN JUST ABOUT FOOD

Food is more than just about food. It plays a multifaceted role in our lives; it sustains, nourishes and connects us to each other. Food is culture and tradition that bridges relations, connects people across oceans and economies.
However, the dynamics of our global food system has become increasingly complex. The abundance in the global food network coexists with a dangerously unbalanced system where people suffer from severe hunger as well as obesity. As water and energy shortages continue to threaten our global food security, social and environmental sustainability further decline. These are the greatest challenges for humanity that can only be addressed though the continuous process of innovation.

WHAT IS A FOOD INNOVATOR?

Thinking “outside the plot” is just one aspect of a food innovator. Food innovators bring food at the centre stage on both a personal and professional level. They are the food scientists, the social farmers, the entrepreneurs and engineers, designers and thinkers addressing the challenges that we face in our growing complex food system.
Food innovators experimentwith ways to produce more and better food. They engineer processes to manufacture a variety of flavors from just a few simple ingredients. They design distribution systems that bring diversity to our markets and kitchens. They create shopping experiences that speak to our individual taste and anticipate our pleasures to come. The Food innovator, armed with their knowledge and experience in technological innovations, are poised to go beyond the limits, to transforming the way we experience food in all our encounters with it.

WHY SUPPORT THE FOOD INNOVATION PROGRAM?

Food is a global language. It is a highly interdisciplinary sector, a primary commodity and an expression of cultural existence;food unites all people, industries and countries. Players in the food industry are pioneers in taking care of something that is more than just the bottom line. Their choices can significantly impact human health, economic growth and global sustainability.
We need to ask ourselves…

MAPPING OUT THE FUTURE OF FOOD

What will the future of food be like in 10 years? In 2013, the Institute for the Future’s Global Food Outlook program set out to explore the ways in which emerging technologies and sciences are reshaping the global food web. The study delves into how several fundamental strategies radically transformed, and continue to shape, our food system. What did they come up with? After a yearlong exploration, the IFTF put together a thought-provoking map to be used as a tool forigniting conversations about how the use of technologies can be used wisely to close crucial gaps in the food system.
